The designs in this gallery are orientated towards the decorative and ornamental. Imagery derives from Don's fascination with the unending variations in nature's colours, patterns, and textures. The particular themes of birds and fishes stem directly from a rural childhood and his commitment to conservation.
Experiences of near loss of life and a period of impaired hearing during childhood bequeathed a heightened visual awareness and a deep gratitude of "simply being alive." The designs reflect a sense that there is nothing dull or ordinary around us. For Don, the commonplace, on closer examination, often contains colours and patterns of stunning beauty as in the variations of a starling’s plumage for example.
