Treatment of the landscape is varied.
Some paintings are pure celebrations of the visual qualities of particular scenes, whilst others go more deeply into a sense of the past being ever present. Such works have more spiritual undertones reflecting Don's deepening interest in origins and past inhabitants. His research for these works involves the study of fossils and archaeology which, he says, "Frequently heightens the aesthetic beauty and visual significance of places."
